Job Description

Who we are

Samsara (NYSE: IOT) is the pioneer of the Connected Operations™ Cloud, which is a platform that enables organizations that depend on physical operations to harness Internet of Things (IoT) data to develop actionable insights and improve their operations. At Samsara, we are helping improve the safety, efficiency and sustainability of the physical operations that power our global economy. Representing more than 40% of global GDP, these industries are the infrastructure of our planet, including agriculture, construction, field services, transportation, and manufacturing — and we are excited to help digitally transform their operations at scale.

Working at Samsara means you’ll help define the future of physical operations and be on a team that’s shaping an exciting array of product solutions, including Video-Based Safety, Vehicle Telematics, Apps and Driver Workflows, and Equipment Monitoring. As part of a recently public company, you’ll have the autonomy and support to make an impact as we build for the long term.

About the role:

The Samsara Tax Department strives to be a best-in-class tax function that manages core tax processes efficiently while continuously adding value across the business. We are looking for a Senior Tax Accountant to join our Indirect Tax team and own day-to-day indirect tax compliance for North America (United States, Canada, and Mexico), manage relationships with our indirect tax advisors, and assist with indirect tax planning.

This role is the first contact for point-of-sale tax questions from across Samsara’s sales organization. You will own our internal tax ticket queue ensuring Account Executives, Order-to-Cash, Procure-to-Pay, and other business partners get clear, accurate, and timely answers to point-of-sale tax questions. The ideal candidate is customer service oriented, has a strong work ethic, is eager to learn, and can turn complex tax rules into concise, easy-to-understand guidance for non-tax audiences.

You will work closely with our Tax Technology and Operations team, external tax advisors, and Finance partners.  This is a great opportunity to help shape how we scale and automate indirect tax at Samsara! This role reports to the Manager II, Tax Accounting

This is remote position open to candidates residing in the US except Alaska, Austin Metro, Boulder Metro, California, Chicago Metro, Connecticut, Dallas Metro, Denver Metro, Houston Metro, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Seattle Metro, and Washington, D.C.

You should apply if:

  • You want to impact the industries that run our world: Your efforts will result in real-world impact—helping to keep the lights on, get food into grocery stores, reduce emissions, and most importantly, ensure workers return home safely.
  • You are the architect of your own career: If you put in the work, this role won't be your last at Samsara. We set up our employees for success and have built a culture that encourages rapid career development, countless opportunities to experiment and master your craft in a hyper growth environment.
  • You're energized by our opportunity: The vision we have to digitize large sectors of the global economy requires your full focus and best efforts to bring forth creative, ambitious ideas for our customers.
  • You want to be with the best: At Samsara, we win together, celebrate together and support each other. You will be surrounded by a high-calibre team that will encourage you to do your best.

In this role, you will:

  • Own the tax ticket queue end to end: triage, research, resolve, and document indirect tax questions from Sales, Order-to-Cash, Procure-to-Pay, and other internal teams.
  • Deliver responsive, high-quality service to business partners, especially Account Executives, with clear and concise answers that keep deals and transactions moving.
  • Escalate deal-specific questions to the Tax Technology and Operations team and policy questions to the Tax Accounting Manager, with well-organized research and a recommended position.
  • Track ticket volume, recurring themes, and turnaround times, and share insights that guide FAQs, self-service content, and automation.
  • Manage US sales and use tax compliance, including data gathering, return preparation and review, and timely filing and payment, in partnership with external compliance providers.
  • Support Canada GST/HST/PST/QST and Mexico IVA compliance, including data gathering and coordination with external advisors.
  • Prepare recurring filings and accruals such as California use tax, Ohio Commercial Activity Tax, and state retail delivery fees (e.g., Colorado and Minnesota).
  • Reconcile indirect tax general ledger accounts monthly and support month-end and quarter-end close.
  • Monitor and resolve tax calculation errors across Vertex, NetSuite, and Salesforce, and partner with systems teams to test product taxability and process changes.
  • Maintain customer exemption certificates and perform the annual exemption certificate review.
  • Support sales and use tax audits and notices: gather documentation, prepare workpapers, and respond to taxing authorities.
  • Support cash tax forecasting and other Tax Department projects as capacity allows, including direct tax projects.
  • Work closely with external tax advisors on research, compliance, and special projects.
  • Champion, role model, and embed Samsara's cultural principles (Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, Win as a Team) as we scale globally and across new offices.

Minimum requirements for the role:

  • 3+ years of indirect tax experience in public accounting, in-house at a company, or a combination of both.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Working knowledge of US sales and use tax compliance, including return preparation and multistate filings.
  • Advanced Excel or Google Sheets skills, with the ability to work with large data sets.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain tax concepts to non-tax business partners.
  • Customer service mindset and a strong work ethic: responsive, organized, and accountable for follow-through.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and recurring deadlines with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

An ideal candidate also has:

  • Big 4 experience in a tax compliance or return preparation team.
  • CPA license or active progress toward it.
  • Hands-on experience with Vertex, NetSuite, Salesforce, and Zendesk (or similar ticketing tools).
  • Exposure to Canadian GST/HST/PST/QST and/or Mexican IVA and CFDI requirements.
  • Working knowledge of direct tax concepts.
  • Experience in SaaS, technology, or IoT hardware companies.
  • Professional proficiency in Spanish.
  • Interest in using automation and AI tools to improve tax processes.
