Job Description

AECOM is seeking a Gas to Power Engineering Design Manager with a technical background to join our growing U.S. Energy team. This individual will lead the technical development, coordination and delivery of our multidisciplinary engineering and design teams on fast paced, complex projects involving gas to power generation, battery energy storage systems (BESS), electrical distribution and other associated site industrial infrastructure in support of datacenters.

The successful candidate will combine strong technical engineering management skills with a practical understanding of civil, structural, electrical, mechanical, process, piping, and facility engineering. This position will be part of the project leadership team that routinely interacts with clients and will serve as the primary internal design team interface, leading the technical team in projects from conceptual planning and front-end engineering through detailed design, procurement support, construction, commissioning, and closeout.

We are looking for a collaborative leader who is comfortable managing and driving budgets, schedules, and technical work production in a fast paced, dynamic and challenging environment. The right person takes ownership of the technical work scope delivery and has the instincts to know when to lead, when to listen, and when to bring in someone else's expertise.

The job responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Proactively Lead feasibility studies, front-end engineering, detailed design, and construction-support assignments for power plant developments, especially targeted for datacenter clients.
  • Lead project technical scope development, manage technical delivery team and coordinate completion of project technical scope.
  • Lead the preparation and maintenance of technical project execution plans, staffing plans and manhour estimates, schedules, work breakdown structures, budgets, and progress reports.
  • Coordinate project work activities performed across multiple AECOM offices and technical disciplines. Review project status, identify emerging constraints, and implement corrective actions to support schedule and budget performance.
  • Lead project design reviews, constructability reviews, and client progress meetings. Provide timely responses to contractor RFIs, submittals, field questions, and design changes during construction.
  • Support project closeout, record drawings, lessons learned, and final project documentation. Drive successful projects through continuous communication and a willingness to get the job done.
  • Direct multidisciplinary teams that may include process, mechanical, piping, civil, structural, geotechnical, electrical, instrumentation and controls, environmental, permitting, surveying, and construction professionals.
  • Provide technical oversight for developing power plant and facility design, including gas power generation equipment, emissions controls systems, BESS, electrical power distribution, site development, valve stations, meter and proving facilities, storage tanks, and associated utility systems.
  • Support the development and review of: Basis of design documents, Process flow diagrams and piping and instrumentation diagrams, Facility layouts and equipment arrangements, Hydraulic surge, and transient analyses.
  • Support the development and review of: Turbine performance predictive modeling, Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability (RAM) analyses, Protections and Controls, Equipment data sheets and technical specifications
  • Provide oversight in site civil and structural design packages including Mechanical and process-piping design packages, Electrical and controls design packages, Material requisitions and procurement documentation, Tie-in, shutdown, commissioning, and startup plans along with Issued-for-bid and issued-for-construction packages
  • Evaluate technical alternatives and help clients balance safety, operability, constructability, lifecycle cost, schedule, and operational continuity. You are a leader and will become a trusted advisor to our clients.
  • Coordinate vendor technical information and support equipment evaluation, selection, procurement, and expediting. Promote quality reviews and integrated design coordination across disciplines, drawing out input from specialists rather than defaulting to your own read of a problem.
  • Coordinate internal resources to provide support of permitting activities involving agencies and stakeholders such as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, state environmental agencies, transportation departments, local building departments, utilities, port authorities, and landowners. Coordinate surveying, utility investigations, geotechnical studies, potholing, right-of-way requirements, and environmental field activities.
  • Work with clients and permitting specialists to identify approval requirements early and integrate them into the project schedule. Serve as a trusted point of contact for existing and prospective energy clients.
  • Develop a strong understanding of client facilities, operational priorities, capital programs, and long-term infrastructure needs. Develop scopes of work, staffing plans, schedules, level-of-effort estimates, and technical approaches for new opportunities.
  • Build long-term relationships through responsive communication, sound technical judgment, and consistent project delivery. Mentor developing project engineers and technical staff and make it a habit to point out their good work before your own.
  • Maintaining a track record of taking on more than what's strictly assigned and following through until the work is genuinely finished.
