Photographer

Join Agence France-Presse (AFP), a leading international news agency, as a photographer in our Tokyo bureau. In this dynamic role, you will produce compelling and accurate coverage of a wide range of topics, including breaking news, politics, sports, and human-interest stories. You will work closely with text and video colleagues, conduct research, plan coverage, and generate original story ideas. The position requires flexibility in working hours and the ability to work under tight deadlines. Fluency in English is required, and proficiency in Japanese is preferred.

• Producing compelling and accurate photo coverage of a wide range of events in Japan, including breaking news, politics, sports, and human-interest stories.
• Conducting research, planning coverage, and generating original story ideas, including photo essays, in coordination with the Japan Chief Photographer and regional photo editing desks.
• Shooting live events and transmitting photos directly from the camera, ensuring fast, reliable, and high-quality news coverage.

• Excellent shooting and editing skills and the ability to craft unique and creative visual storytelling ideas about Japan that appeal internationally

• Keen interest in Japanese affairs and stories that will engage younger audiences

• Experience in wire agencies is not essential, but would be an advantage

• Work well under tight deadlines, while collaborating effectively with colleagues in the bureau

• Interest in social media and active on social networking platforms, especially in breaking news situations when obtaining user-generated content is key

• Fluent English is required and the selected candidate will be expected to have some Japanese proficiency/learn the language; French or other languages would be an advantage

• Ability to operate a drone (a Japanese license would be appreciated)
